Governing Board Training
The RH Perry Foundation offers a six-week certified evaluation and training program for Governing Boards of colleges and universities that are challenged or at risk of failure.
The evaluation/training program begins with the full Board completing an anonymous self-appraisal offered online through our password-protected Secure Trustee Suite. The 30 survey questions, often with multiple acceptable answers, are designed to test board awareness of its key responsibilities as a governing body. The survey results will be collected and analyzed to determine:
√ The extent to which the full Board understands its traditional roles;
√ The degree to which the Board as a whole understands the additional and separate authorities of Administration and Faculty on campus; and
√ The kind of understanding and expertise needed on the Board in order to carry out its basic responsibilities.
Following this first phase of training, the results of which will be shared with the participants, the Board will then evaluate online four hypothetical cases that have been customized by the Foundation to the type of college or university that the board oversees. Once the Board has completed this two-stage self-analysis, the Foundation's evaluation - including a clear picture of the kind of experience, knowledge, and commitment needed on the Board - will be presented to the Board Chair and Executive Committee to help them determine the expertise that will be needed in the new trustees that the Foundation is searching for. Consultants will also be available to help the Board address generic problems on the current Board that the survey and cases have revealed.
